Salmon
Arm is located on the southwest arm of Shuswap Lake. Both the
city and the lake were named for the large runs of salmon that
once ran up the creeks which empty into the lake.
The
city of Salmon Arm was started as a railway camp during the construction
of the CPR railway in the 1880s. In 1888 the first white settlers
arrived in the area, and logging, farming and dairying soon became
the regions primary industries.
The
Salmon Arm wharf recalls the days of steamship transportation
on the lakes and rivers of the Thompson-Shuswap Region. Today
locals and visitors alike can enjoy a stroll on the wharf year-round
and during the summer free music concerts are often held at the
waterfront. The annual Grebe Festival is held in May each year
at the waterfowl sanctuary next to the wharf. Houseboat rentals
are available at the wharf, as well as a float plane dock.
Today,
Salmon Arm is home to many artists, musicians and outdoors enthusiasts.
Its location on Shuswap Lake, and easy access to parks and wilderness
areas, make it a prime destination for recreation-seekers. In
August it is home to the annual Roots
& Blues Music Festival, which brings some of Canada's
top folk music perfomers to the region each year.
