The
community of Sorrento was developed by an eastern capitalist,
J.R. Kinghorn. Thinking the C.P.R. railway would be routed along
the shores of Shuswap Lake, he planned Sorrento in order to take
advantage of the proposed rail line. The view to Copper Island
reminded him of his honeymoon in Sorrento,Italy which looks toward
the Isle of Capri.
Although
the railhead for the Shuswap Lakes was eventually located at Notch
Hill, southeast of town, Sorrento was a point of transfer for
those heading to the North Shuswap.
The
week-long Shuswap Lake Festival of the Arts is held yearly in
mid-July, attracting a large variety of local artists, including
painters, photographers and sculptors.
Today,
Sorrento is a vacation and retirement paradise. Easily accessible
along the Trans-Canada Highway, it is an excellent destination
for those seeking access to Shuswap Lake.
